What Is Good Online Yoga Teaching?

To answer the question directly, it’s first and foremost the teacher’s ability to demonstrate and guide properly.

If the online yoga class is easy to follow, if it’s graspable of what to do, and if it’s explained how a certain pose can/should feel and how you can modify it, the teacher has done a decent job.

If the teacher performs a high level of detailed instruction, it’s very likely that the teacher has done a lot of yoga in the past. That’s why extensive yoga practice is crucial in order to become a good yoga teacher.

Many yoga teachers are registered at Yoga Alliance, where they’ve received proof they completed yoga teacher training. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the yoga teacher is good. Although it guarantees that the yoga teacher has proven and registered hours of yoga practice, experience, and teacher training.

If you, during your online yoga class, see that the teacher is demonstrating super-advanced poses and asanas, he/she is likely practicing yoga more for him/herself than for the student behind the screen. That’s why truly great online teachers don’t focus too much on advanced asanas. Because they genuinely want yoga to be accessible to as many people as possible. And also because they won’t be able to physically correct their students during class in a safe way.

The second aspect that determines good online yoga teaching is how well the teacher is able to teach “live” in the video, that is give instructions while they are demonstrating.  To me this is an important factor in making the class feel authentic, genuine, and more like an in-person class.

Teachers who are voice guiding “live” during the class, usually through a microphone headset, are directly demonstrating their ability to speak during practice and adapt what they are saying based on how the position feels.

  2. Unpretentious qualities
  3. Developed care for others’ well-being

What Determines High Video Quality for Online Yoga Classes?

Since you – the student behind the screen – are not experiencing the real, physical yoga studio, nor the physical presence of the teacher, the video quality is extremely important.

Imagine a YouTube video where a yoga teacher is demonstrating a class in a messy living room from a vague angle. On top of that, the teacher’s voice is echoing throughout the class. Additionally, the video resolution is so poor, you can see the pixel squares if you look a little closer. Feeling motivated? I doubt it.

In-studio yoga teachers don’t have to consider any of this. That’s why teaching yoga online requires extensive skills. The online yoga teacher doesn’t only need to be an excellent teacher, he/she also has to understand his/her target audience and how to create appealing videos for them.

The four crucial aspects to making a competitive online yoga video class are

  2. High-quality resolution
  3. Clean and minimal background setting
  4. Appropriate cinematography and videography

What Makes a Good Yoga Video Library and Online Archive?

The good thing about yoga videos on YouTube is that it’s possible to attend the classes over and over again. But in order to willingly come back and repeat a class on a yoga YouTube channel, the library has to meet some criteria.

A good YouTube archive is a growing archive – a channel that actively uploads new classes. Taking a class from a recently recorded video makes the class feel more real, fresh, and up-to-date. But it also shows that the channel is active and develops.

An extensive and varying archive is also a plus. The more yoga classes of different kinds that can be found, the better. And if you can access classes through different categories and playlists depending on what kind of class you are looking for, even better.

The more categories a channel offers of different kinds of yoga classes and videos, the more accessible it will be. Therefore folders categorized by length, level and, focus are a must.

One last but important thing to mention, a good YouTube yoga channel should mainly be composed of yoga classes and videos. When vlogs and other types of content are filling up the feed, suddenly the channel is more about the life of the yoga teacher rather than providing yoga classes for the online yoga student. The same applies to promotions and commercials. Of course, I am speaking of an ideal situation and do understand that those kinds of videos and ads are sometimes necessary for different reasons.

A good YouTube yoga library is:

  1. Actively growing with frequently uploaded new videos
  2. Containing many different kinds of yoga classes and videos
  3. Organized and clearly categorized (preferably, classes by length, level and focus)
  4. Not consisting of too many vlogs, promotions, commercials and unrelated content
